Filipino twins enlist in U.S. Merchant Marine Academy

Ronald and Marivic Suarez’s twin boys have both been accepted to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York — one of the five United States Service Academies.

The Merchant Marine Academy is training young men and women to the task of running a large ship.

The Suarez couple is confident their sons will meet their tasks and not break the long history Filipinos have had with the Merchant Marine Academy.

It goes back to 1946 just after World War II.

Fifty midshipmen slots per year for three years were allotted for Filipinos at the academy. The goal then was to rebuild the Philippine merchant sector, which was completely destroyed during the war.

The number of plebe candidates, as they are called, starting this year, is 279 — including the Suarez twins from East Meadow, NY.
