Filipino teen tops math whiz competition in Canada

TORONTO — Pinoy kids tested their math prowess at a national abacus and mental math competition, where thousands of students calculated multitudes of numbers without a calculator.

UCMAS, or Universal Concept Mental Arithmetic System, is an eastern concept from Malaysia and introduced in Canada 15 years ago. The program’s technique caters to different learning styles and helps eliminate math anxiety in children.

Christine Santos gets reactions from young math geniuses, including the Filipino Canadian top winner, 13-year-old Brynelle Tesalona, all the way from British Columbia. He will represent Canada in the next international competition in Cambodia.
