Filipino nurses board the Bernie Bus to spread hope for Sanders

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Bernie Bus official makes its rounds in the bay area.

Members of the National Nurses United, the first major labor organization to support Senator Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign, are registering voters and telling them why he is the best candidate for the job.

“First of all, it’s the Medicare for all,” said Arnel Roca. “We have a lot of undocumented Filipinos here in the Bay Area.”

Maricris Barquilla adds, “Bernie is actually the only candidate who stands up for the workers and he’s for the middle class.”

“He is willing to support us for free education for our children,” Aisha Magno.

With 90,000 members these nurses say they are excited to exercise their right to vote.

Co-president of National Nurses United and Fil-Am registered nurse Zenei Cortez says that despite a huge gap in delegates between Sanders and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton she still has faith that sanders will become the democratic presidential nominee.

Cortez said, “All through the primaries and the different states we never had a doubt that Bernie would not be the candidate for president so we are with Bernie all the way and we are in it to win it.”

Cortez understands that many Fil-Am’s have already pledged their support for Clinton; however, she sends this message.

“To my fellow kababayans, I just want you to know that Bernie Sanders has stood his ground for the past 38 years,” said Cortez. “With Hillary Clinton she has flip-flopped and changed her position on so many issues so I need for you to do the research and see what’s going on. Bernie has been there for the 99 percent and we need Bernie elected for president.”

The nurses say Californians can expect to see the Bernie Bus travel up and down the Golden State and make frequent stops to promote Senator Sanders in anticipation of the June 7 primary.
