Filipino-led organization provides assistance to Hurricane Harvey victims
HOUSTON, TX —
Hurricane Harvey left a permanent mark on Houston. Hundreds of families are in recovery mode. Local Fil-Am organizations continue to support those in need.
With hurricane season already starting — and threats of destruction becoming more and more a possibility, Filipinos in Texas are keeping a close watch and making sure they’re prepared for whatever mother nature brings.
9 months after Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on Houston, families are still struggling to recover. The Filipino Young Professionals, or FYP of Houston, provided much-needed help to affected people.
FYP received 35 applications from families requesting assistance. 5 families still recovering were chosen to receive thousands of dollars from their Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund.
FYP was one of the first Fil-Am groups that responded after the storm, organizing relief drives and getting volunteers for broader relief efforts in the city.
“I was one of the first responders in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, and to see it go from there, and then several months after to see FYP provide financial support. It is really heart-warming, and I am so happy to be helping out our Kababayans,” saidNoureliza Montifar.
The recipients said they could definitely use the money to fix their homes, find temporary housing and for emergency needs.
“We are really grateful that somebody, especially our kababayans are here with us through this ordeal, helping us down our road to normalcy and recovery,” said Christima Nacino.
But members of the FYP know more people need their help.
According to a survey by the Kaiser Family Foundation, nearly half of all Texans impacted by Hurricane Harvey are not getting the assistance they need to fully recover. Most of those hardest-hit come are low-income, and only 2 in 10 flood-impacted homeowners had insurance protection.
“Neighbors came together to help rescue us, rescue our dogs. So, the community came together in a big way to help each other,” said Troy Hutcheon.
These families are trying their best to adjust to their difficult post-Harvey world. For them, doesn’t matter where the help comes from. Anything, to get back to normal.
