NEW YORK CITY – 33-year old Fernando Licay, who reportedly works for a contractor for the U.S. Navy, was swimming with a group of friends at the Diego Garcia Island, off the British Indian Ocean territory.
But when Licay decided to go for a swim alone, witnesses said a shark, out of nowhere, attacked a bit his leg.
A source close to the victim told Balitang America that Licay fought for his life, as the shark chewed on his leg and would not let go.
The same source also said that there may have been more than just one shark that attacked Licay that day.
Friend and former classmate, Kristine Lee Gabut-Piano, who witnessed the attack said Licay died shortly after the shark finally let go of his leg, possibly due to heavy blood loss.
Licay was rushed to the hospital but it was too late.
Ligay was originally from Cagayan de Oro in the Philippines.
