Filipino-Canadian speed skater Junio Gilmore gives up Olympic spot to teammate

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Filipino-Canadian long track speed skater gave up his spot in Wednesday’s 1,000-meter race to teammate Denny Morrison.

Junio who finished 10th in the 500-meter race said in a statement: “How Denny is skating now, I believe it’s in the best interest of the team if he races.”

He added: “As Canadians, we’re not just here to compete; we are here to win.”

In the meantime, Filipino-American short track speed skater JR Celski looks to bounce back from his fourth place finish in the 1,500-meter race.

The qualifying round for the 1,000-meter race takes place Thursday.

Celski will be racing in the sixth heat it would take place at about 2:30 a.m. PST.

The long awaited debut of Michael Christian Martinez is also scheduled for Thursday at 7 a.m. PST.
