Filipinas or Pilipinas?

By Pinky Webb

MANILA – National artist and president of the ‘Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino,’ Virgilio Almario has long been pushing for the use of ‘Filipinas’ instead of Pilipinas to refer to the Philippines.

In a resolution dated April 2013, the commission re-affirmed a decision to revive the use of ‘Filipinas’. It says the term “Filipinas” has been used since the year 1565 before it was changed into “Pilipinas” in the 20th century because there was no letter “f” in the Filipino alphabet.

In 1987, the letter ‘f’ was added to the local alphabet.

it’s complicated and ridiculous yo continue referring to the country as ‘Pilipinas’ when Filipinos call their national language ‘filipino’.

The commission now wants to change the names of institutions carrying the word ‘Pilipinas’.

But this won’t be compulsory especially for agencies created during the time when there was no letter ‘f’ in the filipino alphabet like the University of the Philippines and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

The commission also wants to use the term ‘Filipinas’ in seals, letterheads, and other materials.

Dahil in the first place Filipinas talaga ang pangalan ng Pilipinas.

The reason is not really plausible. But it’s not really impossible too, maybe try to propose a better reason. We can’t just decide to change it because our country’s name has been an ‘institution’ for a long time and changing it suddenly has risks and dangers. And for those who keep on saying irrational things about this issue, GROW UP!
