We have followed the case of Nanay Fedelina, a Filipina survivor of human trafficking and modern-day slavery and was even the subject of the BA Original film Kept: Six Decades of Servitude.
And while it may have taken decades — she is finally reunited with family.
Steve Angeles joins us live from Los Angeles to tell us more about this happy reunion.
Nanay Fedelina has been championed by the Filipino community as she fought back against the abuses and injustices — and now, they’ve managed to bring back something she’s lost a long time ago: her family.
It may have taken more than 40 years but Nanay Fedelina, who was kept as a modern-day slave for a Southern California Filipino family for over sixty bears before regaining her freedom less than two years ago has finally reunited with her younger sister.
Nanay Fedelina’s sister, along with her daughter and granddaughter, secured visas this past week and landed in Los Angeles, surprising Nanay Fedelina at the Pilipino Workers Center.
After media reports about Nanay Fedelina’s life story had surfaced, a mutual friend in Los Angeles managed to connect them to each other last year.
While the two had communicated through video chats since, this is the first time that Nanay Fedelina has met with a family member face to face since her traffickers brought her from Manila to Los Angeles in the 1980s, and eventually cutting her off from her family.
The family is now looking forward to catching up on some long awaited quality time in Los Angeles
