LOS ANGELES — A Filipina community leader is on the verge of making history in LA’s city hall.
LA Mayor Eric Garcetti has nominated his current director of scheduling, and former Barack Obama appointee Jessica Caloza as a commissioner for the Board of Public Works.
A confirmation from city council would make her the first Filipina to hold that post.
Before she worked her way up as one of the highest ranked-Filipina women in city hall’s history, Caloza served in the Obama administration in the Department of Education, and has worked as a campaign aide for several members of Congress.
The Philippine-born Caloza is active in several community organizations including Kaya, Cause, and FYLPRO.
The nomination comes a few weeks after community member Joel Jacinto stepped down from his post after his name was linked to a corruption scandal in city hall.
While Jacinto is being investigated, he has not been accused of criminal activity.
