PENSACOLA, FL — Filipino-American candidate Jennifer Mijares-Zimmerman won the Democratic nomination for U.S. House of Representatives in Florida’s 1st congressional district.
With more than 60% of the vote, Mijares-Zimmerman, also known as “Doctor Z,” beat Democratic primary opponent Phil Ehr – who raised 6 times more campaign funds than Mijares-Zimmerman.
Meanwhile, incumbent congressman Matt Gaetz breezed through the Republican primary,
Zimmerman will face congressman Gaetz in November, in arguably the most Republican district in the sunshine state.
Florida’s district 1 has not supported a Democratic president since John F. Kennedy in the 1960’s.
It’s an uphill battle against Gaetz, but Mijares-Zimmerman believes that a bluewave is coming in November.
Mijares-Zimmerman, if elected, will be the first full-blooded Filipino to win a seat in the U.S. Congress.
