WEST COVINA, Calif. – It was a bizarre scene at a Filipino shopping plaza in West Covina on Monday morning as a 38-year-old homeless Filipina Mary Grace Trinidad is believed to have given birth at the restroom inside the Subway sandwich restaurant.
After giving birth to a baby boy inside the shop, she allegedly left him partially submerged in the toilet and took off. Police eventually tracked her down and brought her and the new born to a local hospital.
“Only yesterday she was there in front of the restaurant, probably in labor na siya yesterday pa,” said Lydia Olaivar.
Filipinos and regulars in the area say she is well-known. For the last several years, she has been sleeping and begging in the area, and has even worked at some of the nearby businesses.
“Around this area she is really popular. Usually, she uses the restroom around all of these restaurants in the area because she’s homeless,” Olaivar said.
Police records show Trinidad has had a criminal history and was currently wanted on a drug-related warrant.
Some of the regulars at the center say that she may have engaged in sex acts in exchange for money and it could’ve resulted in the pregnancy.
Trinidad will be booked and charged counts that may include attempted murder and child abandonment after she is released from the hospital.
The murder charges could have been avoided through the state’s Safe Surrender Law that allows mothers to turn their new born babies no questions asked over to fire stations or hospitals.
