Long Beach, Calif – The pork barrel scam takes center stage throughout Filipino communities around the world as thousands remember the 41st anniversary of Martial Law.

Many will call for the abolition of the pork barrel system which justice officials believe lawmakers may have used for plunder.

On the eve of the Los Angeles anti-pork protest, Filipinos are taking action with a mass phone-in to the Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. “We know that our families back home are suffering under the economic and political system in the Philippines that is thoroughly corrupt and we want things to change back home. And we know how hard it is,” said Eric Tandoc, secretary general of Anakbayan LA.

Migrante International has called for Thursday to be a zero remittance day, encouraging Filipinos to not send money to the Philippines as a message that Filipinos abroad will not support pork barrel.

”These overseas Filipino workers send billions and sometimes 20 billion every year in remittances and a lot of that tax money goes to the Philippine government,” said Alex Montances of the National Alliance of Filipino Concerns.

Activists also took to the phone lines filling up the voice mail of the Philippine embassy with their concerns.

”Tell president Aquino to abolish all pork including his own,” Tandoc said on the phone.

While most of the calls went straight to voicemail Jedi Jimenez actually got a receptionist on the line.

”She seemed like she understood what I was talking about and she was like oh its ok I hear the same concerns that you’re talking about,” said Jimenez of Anakbayan LA.

The embassy in Washington DC says it welcomes the vigilance of the Filipino community and calls on them to continue supporting President Aquino’s anti-corruption efforts.

I don’t understand why now ? The people of philippines knew about the Pork Barrel funds was been misuse by some lawmakers, why some of the lawmakers didn’t come forward and say what was happening to some of the Pork Barrel funds ? Well I guess when you take money from the poor, they think the poor people can’t do anything about it ? I feel sorry for the poor people from philippines that come to America and work HARD to send money to phillipines and have the lawmakers steal the money from them !
