REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Could a decision be made soon by the US government to grant temporary protected status or TPS to the Philippines? Filipino community leaders continue to fight for it as they engage in talks with US officials.

TPS is a humanitarian relief granted to foreign nationals in the United States when their country of origin suffers from a calamity such as the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Yolanda.

If granted, TPS will allow thousands of undocumented Filipinos in the United States to stay legally for at least 18 months, work legally, and travel.

Loida Nicolas Lewis of US Pinoys for Good Governance, along with other Filipino community leaders like Atty. Arnedo Valera of the Migrant Heritage Commission—who spearheaded the call for TPS—have been meeting with the Philippine desk officer of the State Department and with Department of Homeland Security officials, pushing them to grant the Philippines TPS designation.

In a live interview via Skype with Balitang America, Lewis called on all Filipinos to call the White House comment line at (202)456-1111, leave messages on the State Department and DHS comment lines, as well to push lawmakers for positive recommendations to grant TPS.
