FilAm leaders in NV encourage kababayans to vote wisely

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – Data from the 2010 U.S. census show that Filipinos are the largest group of Asian Americans in Nevada.  Community leaders and advocates said this thriving population is also becoming more involved in U.S. politics.

Nevada is considered a swing state, a battleground where the election is fought.  Racial diversity is a key characteristic of most swing states and Nevada’s growing immigrant population is a lure for presidential candidates.

Pinoy voters said they want to see candidates who can address not just the economy, but the issues of immigration reform and family reunification.  Nevada voter, Kate Recto stated, “If you want your family members to come here through comprehensive immigration reform, now is your chance to let your voice be heard; the most important for Asians right now and for Filipinos is comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship.”

Another Pinoy voter, Don Andres added, “This campaign is all about listening and being a champion for everyday Americans, making sure that every community has a voice on the table.”

These Pinoy registered voters think Democratic Presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton has what it takes to address pressing immigrant issues because they saw how she helped the community, during her time as First Lady. Pinoy community leader, Margie Gonzales shared that while in the Philippines, when her husband, then President Bill Clinton attended the APEC Summit, Mrs. Clinton took the time to support an organization called Haven for Women and Abused Children, which at that time helped 15,000 Filipinos. Gonzales pointed out, “She could have visited other places, or did not bother, but she took the time and but went there.

In line with the country holding its National Voter Registration Day, these Pinoy community leaders are encouraging kababayans to practice their right to vote and to vote wisely.  Another Filipino community leader, Rozita Lee, said, “I think if we as a group, as leaders in the community will have workshops, will have sessions where we will invite people to come and learn about what it is to be a citizen, what it is to have responsibility.  One of that, responsibility of being a citizen is voting to make sure that they will choose the right people who will help them in their issues.  And education is a very important factor.”

Luisa Blue added, “Its the only way that our issues will be heard — if they exercise their right to vote because these candidates need to address the issues that face the AAPI community.”
