SALT LAKE CITY – Filipino-American Sean Reyes officially filed his candidacy for a second term as Utah attorney general Wednesday morning.
Reyes, a Republican, has run the office since December, when he was appointed by Gov. Gary Herbert to replace Republican John Swallow, who resigned after nearly 11 months as attorney general.
Swallow stepped down due to allegations of bribery and other misconduct.
Reyes, who ran against Swallow in 2012, has been attorney general for almost three months.
Since he’s taken over the position, Reyes has focused his attention on the state’s battle over same-sex marriage and the capturing and charging of international criminal Victor Rax, who allegedly used teenage boys from undocumented families for selling illegal drugs.
As of Wednesday, Reyes has one challenger for the office, and it’s one of his own staff attorneys, Democrat Charles Stormont.
The election will be held this fall.
