Fil-Am professor responds to backlash over “My Family’s Slave” article

Assistant Professor at Cal Poly Pomona Dr. Anthony Ocampo facilitates a discussion among students enrolled in his class on Filipino-American sociology.

Ocampo has incorporated late Fil-Am writer Alex Tizon’s article in The Atlantic, “My Family’s Slave,” as one of the required readings.

Ocampo praises the story. and uses it as a teaching tool to discuss a contradictory Filipino experience in America.

“Alex Tizon’s story was exceptional, because it wasn’t just about servitude. It was about someone who was enslaved, which I mean, when you think about slavery in the American context, you think of that as something in the past.”

Ocampo says that after hearing some of the backlash of the story, he agrees that those reactions are justified.
