Filipino-American Sedrick Barefield and the University of Utah Runnin’ Utes play in the National Invitation Tournament championship game tonight at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Barefield and the second-seeded Utes face number four-seed Penn State. The junior point guard has been one of Utah’s go-to scorers during the tournament, averaging 14 points per game while shooting 48 percent from the field — including 43 percent from 3-point range.
Barefield and the Utes advanced through the 32-team bracket by beating UC Davis, LSU, Saint Mary’s, and Western Kentucky. This is Utah’s first trip to the NIT title game in 44 years.
