Fil-Am laundry business owner on how to properly sanitize your clothes

NEW YORK — Amid the coronavirus crisis, when staying clean is a matter of life and death — Rechelle Balanzat, a New York-based Filipina laundry business owner, talked about why it’s important to sanitize clothes properly.

“If you’re doing laundry and you wanna disinfect your clothes, you can always add a teaspoon of ammonia. With whites you can add a little bit of Clorox or bleach during the washing process,” said Balanzat. “So if you have white, a little bit of bleach, with colors, a little bit of ammonia, not too much because it will break down the fibers.”

Balanzat said no living organism can survive the cleaning process.

Balanzat is owner of “Juliette,” branded as the Uber version of laundry.

Using an app, clients can have their laundry picked up, cleaned and delivered back in just 24 hours.

This could be a safer option amid the coronavirus crisis than going to laundromats.

But Balanzat said these days, it’s been harder for them to do business.

“If transit is shutdown, then the team, cannot get to work, at that point even if I had all the laundry in the world, if my team can’t go to work it’s going to affect me,” she said. “I have been working with other colleagues on contingency plans.”

Despite major challenges to small business owners because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Balanzat remains hopeful.

“There’s an entire market of untapped respources, untapped talents and untapped potential in women — because women are the ultimate entrepreneurs, we know how to take a dollar and make it go 10 dollars long.
