REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Filipino-American doctor Jerry Umanos was killed Thursday in Kabul, Afghanistan when a security official allegedly opened fire at an American-run Christian hospital.

Umanos was a practicing pediatric medicine at a community health center and at a children’s hospital in Kabul.

Umanos was among the three Americans killed at CURE Hospital – a hospital that is primarily providing care to needy children.

Several others were hurt in the attack, including another American nurse.

Reports say, Umanos was greeting the two other American visitors at the hospital gate, when the shooting happened.

A spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry said that the gunman was an Afghan police officer, who was also being reported as a hospital guard.

After a failed suicide attempt following the shooting, the gunman was arrested.

Umanos’ father Romeo, a retired Ford Motor Company design engineer living in Michigan, told Balitang America that he is waiting for his son’s remains to be brought back to the United States as soon as possible.

A medicine graduate at Wayne State University in Michigan, Umanos was also a practicing pediatrician at the Lawndale Christian Health Center in Illinois.
