LOS ANGELES – Chef Bev Lazo has been to hell and back and celebrated her new celebrity status.

Lazo is believed to be the first Filipino chef to compete on the Fox reality cooking competition “Hell’s Kitchen” hosted by fiery celebrity chef, Gordon Ramsay.

She held a viewing party at her home restaurant Border Grill, owned by a pair of former Top Chef Masters.

“I think it’s cool and it’s a great way to represent our culture,” she said. “We have a lot of great chefs who are Filipino and I think it’s time for us to shine.”

The 12th season premiered on Fox Thursday night.

The Pangasinan-born chef from is among 20 chefs competing in front of Ramsay.

Luxurious prizes including vacations and shopping sprees are given throughout the season. However, humiliating punishment is also given out by Ramsay, who has the final say on who is eliminated each week.

“Working in the restaurant industry I’m used to working in that environment, a little more intense,” she added. “I’m a big fan of Chef Ramsey and it was an honor to be able to work side by side with him and to get yelled at. It’s just for him to push you to work harder and make you a better chef and that’s why he does what he does and I respect that totally.”

The 43-year old mother of two first found a passion in cooking at age nine, getting inspiration from her mother Evelyn, who was a registered nurse.

“I was always in the kitchen making pinakbet or adobo,” Lazo’s mother said. “But her specialty is different. Maybe my cooking inspired her?”

In the history of television cooking competitions, only two Filipinos have won: Paul Qui won “Top Chef Season 9” while Khristianne Uy won “The Taste” last year.

Foodies believe Lazo’s appearance on “Hell’s Kitchen” will only raise the profile of Filipino cuisine.

“The more that we get our people out there to promote what our cuisine could be so people could ask questions to know what Filipino food is, I think it’s great,” Coolinary Trends’ Lawrence Fama said.

On the season premiere, Lazo got Chef Ramsey’s approval with her signature Southeast Asian fish taco which she served to her friends, family, and supporters.
