LAS VEGAS — A domestic dispute resulted in a shooting rampage and hostage situation.
“If I can’t have you, no one can:” These are the words uttered by 37-year-old Edison Somera to his girlfriend of 21 years.
They had 3 children, and have been living together in a Southwest Las Vegas neighborhood.
According to a police report, during the initial argument on December 13 in their home, Somera pulled out a handgun, pointed it at his girlfriend, and threatened to kill her, their children, and himself. At some point their eldest son intervened, allowing the girlfriend to escape.
Responding patrol officers report that Somera was armed with a handgun and an AK-47 assault rifle.
As Somera tried to find his girlfriend in the neighborhood, the Filipino went to his neighbor’s home, forced his way inside, and took two men at gun point.
During that time, one of the hostages was able to escape through the front door. Somera fired several rounds at the fleeing hostage, and also at officers who were positioned at the entrance of their neighborhood cul-de-sac.
The hostage and the officer are both unharmed.
While Somera was outside the remaining hostage’s residence, he fired several rounds at his own home. All occupants in that house had already escaped, and no injuries were reported.
LVMPD crisis negotiators and the SWAT team took over the tactical operation of the incident. After a 3-hour negotiation crisis, negotiators were able to get Somera to surrender peacefully without hurting the hostage.
Somera is booked at the Clark County Detention Center on multiple charges:
Additional charges are fortcoming, pending the DA’s approval.
Somera is scheduled to appear in court on Friday December 23th.
