LOS ANGELES–The wife of a Filipino American has been identified as one of the students injured in the Santa Monica shooting spree that left 6 people dead.
According to the Pilipino Workers Center, one of their volunteers, Cristle Fernandez, married to Jess Fernandez, was picking up her cap and own for Tuesday’s upcoming graduation ceremony, when she was hit in the leg by a bullet.
Balitang America had met the Fernandez family in December 2010 after her husband Jess, a former medical assistant had moved to California from Arizona with their young daughter. A suspected job search scam had lured the family here. After using all their money to get to California, and selling off many of their belongings they were nearly left homeless, and struggling to survive. However since then, the family has rejoined in Los Angeles where Cristle had been taking classes at Santa Monica City College. Jess’ work had stabilized and was on his way to get his license as a security guard.
Cristle was released from the hospital on Saturday, her birthday, and graduated on Tuesday night. Jess was there, and said that the family is doing fine and is thankful that her injury was very minor.
