Fil-Am activists to Amal Clooney: Prosecute GMA, PNoy

LOS ANGELES – Filipino American activists in Los Angeles are now questioning international human rights lawyer Amal Clooney’s new causes in the Philippines.

As Filipino activists were surprised to hear that Clooney is defending former President Gloria Arroyo, and requesting the United Nations to free Arroyo from her hospital arrest.

“We’ve really grown concerned because she doesn’t really have all of her facts and she’s been misguided and misled particularly with the case of GMA,” said Nikole Cababa of Bayan USA.

Terrie Cervas of Gabriella added, “We are urging Attorney Amal to forge into the record of GMA and we also urge her to talk to actual victims who suffered under GMA”.

Clooney claims that Arroyo’ arrest for alleged embezzlement and corruption charges are politically motivated.

The activists, who have been calling for President Benigno Aquino’s ouster, support Clooney going after Aquino but wish she would also go after her controversial client.

“I think it could help shed light to some of his deficiencies in terms of the alliance, but there’s still a lot education Amal needs to look into because Gloria’s regime is the same regime that Aquino has stepped into. The 2 terms that Gloria had with operation Bantay Kaya in the Philippines she would see that Aquino and Gloria are kind of at a contest in terms of how many human rights violations they can commit,” said Jewelle Dela Cruz of Anakbayan.

Clooney is also reportedly getting involved in the case of the 44 Special Action Forces members killed during the Mamasapano operation that killed terrorist Marwan.

“It would be great if she was more concerned about pressing the Philippine government, including President Aquino, to really actually have more truth out there. Particularly, Filipinos are demanding the truth and they really demanding for Aquino to have more responsibility since he knew very well what was happening in the Mamasapano incident,” said Cababa.

Cababa added that there will be a tribunal of alleged human rights victims later this year as US-based activists will also continue to hold dialogue on the Mamasapano incident. They hope that the high profile lawyer will hear all of the concerns on both issues.

The real issues are that there are activist such as the loud mouth “Bayan Muna” or “Gabriela” who goes around attacking everything thinking they have facts. Amal Clooney is a highly reputable international human rights lawyer and does not operate on hearsay or media sensationalized information…does not operate base on emotions, mere suspicion, gut feeling and not based on suggestions of the EDSA revolutions…

According to Doctor Gener Acob (UP, 1976) Filipino activists at home or abroad usually operate under desperate platform. Rarely do they possessed facts, rather include everything such as rumors, strong suspicion, talk-of-the-town or street corner, blogs, sensationalized media information that are nowhere near any facts…Most groups like Gabriela, Anakbayan or Bayan USA are most of the time misguided (contrary to their claim against Amal) drawing and clinging on to their claims based on strong suspicion.

alamudin should do research on what is the plunder case of GMA before she defends her on the UN court. She might be so embarazzed or end up prosecuting her if she realized that she is a major plunderer. At least GMA is in a hospital and being treated free. One can not corrupt and escape prosecution. Why did she grant Erap Clemency?
