Fil-Am activists call for justice following Chief Justice Sereno’s ouster
Members of the Filipino American Human Rights Alliance recently held a protest in San Francisco to denounce the ouster of Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, which they consider the death of due process.
They said this is an outright violation of the 1987 Philippine Constitution by the very Supreme Court justices who are supposed to uphold the truth and ideals of true democracy.
The top magistrate’s expulsion came after she was accused of failing to file a substantial number of her statements of assets and liabilities, and net worth in previous years. Sereno has denied this.
President Duterte had openly called for Sereno’s removal from the court, calling her an “enemy” after they clashed over his bloody war on drugs and alleged abuse of power.
“We are now finding a situation where the very justices are the violators of the supreme law of the land. Mga sanggano, mga manloloko, mga sinungaling!” says Ago Pedalizo, from the Filipino American Human Rights Alliance.
