The tourism slogan “It’s more fun in the Philippines” seems to also apply in the country’s most famous high security prison, after a recent raid of New Bilibid Prison uncovered prisoners living it up behind bars.
Justice Secretary Leila De Lima and a team of law enforcement agents held a surprise inspection of NBP after receiving reports that drug lords and their gangs operated inside.
Agents seized crystal meth, guns, millions of pesos and dollars in cash, air conditioning units, hot tubs, sex dolls, and even music equipment from inmates’ rooms and so-called “pleasure villas.”
Robbery group leader Henry Colango has even been able to record music videos and hold weekly concerts inside the high-security facility.
De Lima called the situation inside Bilibid unacceptable, and that 19 inmates will be transferred to other facilities and isolated from other prisoners.
The head of the Bureau of Corrections, Franklin Bucayu, says he was unaware of the luxuries enjoyed by the druglords inside the prison.
