SAN FRANCISCO — People gathered at the Bayanihan Community Center to take part in a workshop that connects them with their ancestors, as a way to explore new ways of mental health.
Jana Lynne Umipig is a multidisciplinary artist, organizer, and healer.
Through indigenous teachings from elders in the Philippines combined with her own upbringing — she was asked to lead this workshop by the Filipino Mental Health Initiative San Francisco.
In honor of Filipino-American History month, Umipig says this special ritual and ceremony will welcome in grief made through everyday struggles and the thousands of years of colonization.
“We’re going to be exploring how those energies being in the same space and acknowledging us coming to circle can create some magic.”
The Filipino Mental Health Initiative says this exhibition is part of a month-long presentation called “Filipinx Healer Workshop Series,” where they are allowing the community to access different ways to cope and find balance in their lives.
