REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – An anchor of the Russian-funded news channel “Russia Today” who refused to stand behind Moscow, given the heightened tensions in Ukraine, has Filipino roots.

“Russia Today” anchor Liz Wahl resigned at the end of a show, saying she believed in “disseminating the truth.”

“R.T. is not about the truth,” she said in a CNN interview. “It’s about promoting a Putinist agenda, and I can tell you firsthand, it’s also about bashing America.”

Wahl’s resignation came after another anchor, Abby Martin, seemed to go off script at the end of her program referring to what she called “Russia’s military occupation of Crimea.”

During an interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan about her resignation, Wahl mentioned her ties to the Philippines when speaking of her family history.

“My dad ended up because of this joining the military…met my mother in the Philippines,” she said. “I have family over there. And I see how lucky I am to live in this country.”
