Duterte questions why PH lost Scarborough Shoal to China

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – The Aquino government said it is unfazed over the plans of Philippine Presumptive President Rodrigo Duterte to conduct a probe on how the country supposedly lost the Scarborough Shoal to China in the disputed West Philippine Sea.

Duterte raised the issue of why the country can no longer operate on the shoal, which is located within the Philippines’ 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone.

But Malacanang said Duterte should focus on getting his facts straight from credible sources.

China reportedly has plans to reclaim the shoal later this year and possibly add an airstrip to expand its military reach over the disputed territories.

Duterte wants to find out how they were able to take control of it after the backchannel talks initiated by Senator Antonio Trillanes with the Beijing government.

The backdoor talks were reportedly approved by President Aquino in an effort to ease tensions at the shoal in 2012.

China has controlled the shoal for four years after a month-long standoff with the Philippines.

Atty. Rodel Rodis, president of US Pinoys for Good Governance, says China’s presence on the Scarborough Shoal is of critical importance to both the Philippines and the US.

“China has already reclaimed seven of the Philippine shoals in the West Philippine Sea,” Rodis told BA during an in-studio interview. “They’ve installed runways, port facilities, and even surface-to-air missiles. If they succeed to do that in Scarborough Shoal that’s a threat because that’s only 110 miles from Zambales, which is where Subic is located and that’s very close to Manila. The 700-mile range of its planes and rockets pose a clear and present danger to Philippine security.”

While the Philippines is so deeply entangled with corruption, incompetence, lack of everything, etc…we barely can have a ship or two to go out there 200 miles …If none was given to us…or let’s just say we were able to purchase one or two at a fairly decent price…The question is, is it properly outfitted to go out within the Scarborough Shoals? The problem is that we have more senators, congressmen and Vice President, governors, mayors, etc. who have done nothing but getting RICHER & FAMOUS…

China built all kinds of facilities…however you want to call it…it doesn’t matter if they built BAHAY KUBO there, they did it without Philippines approval? The question is, what are going to do about it? You insist we still have Scarborough Shoal…they probably build new homes for sale? How can we effectively oppose China about the disputed islands? Given the commercial by Tita Kris Aquino, Chinese chicken these and that? Seriously, it’s really contradicting our stand on the disputed islands…
