Duterte prepares for third annual SONA to joint Philippine Congress

Two years into his term – Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte is set to deliver his third State of the Nation Address, or SONA, on Monday.

While SONAs are meant to highlight the administration’s recent accomplishments and future legislative plans, President Duterte will not tout his administration’s achievements this time — instead, palace officials say “he would speak as the nation’s father who cares about his people.”

The president’s annual report to the joint session of Philippine Congress will be under the direction of Joyce Bernal — an award-winning director known for her hit romantic comedies.

While Duterte is known for deviating from prepared speeches, Malacanang is promising a shorter, 35-minute speech this time.

Last year’s SONA lasted for 120 minutes — including Duterte’s jokes and off-the-cuff remarks.

Meanwhile, at this #BabaeAko community forum in New York, these Filipinos say they will be closely watching the president’s annual report on Monday.

As the president delivers his SONA, members of the Malaya movement will be holding a counter SONA protest, called People’s State of the Nation address at the Philippine consulate in New York on Monday.
