NEW YORK – An emotional Nonito Donaire Jr. has formally accepted the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) Fighter of the Year award, the sport’s biggest accolade for 2012.

“I was that little kid that never had anything, I was that little kid that people made fun of, hurt, I was one of those kids decided that I would try to end my life, I got to that crossroads in my life,” said Donaire during his acceptance speech.

The BWAA recognized Donaire’s achievements in 2012 that saw the Filipino Flash nab two world titles at the expense of four fighters.

The four-division champion accepted his Sugar Ray Robinson trophy from BWAA president Jack Hirsch.

The awarding ceremonies took two days before Donaire’s title unification bout against Guillermo Rigondeaux.

Before the ceremonies, Donaire had a chance to visit the historic radio music city hall where preparations for fight night were underway. He camp was met there by Christine Seinecki, the Filipino American dancer of the famous Radio City Rockettes.

“We’re so excited to have Nonito Donaire fighting this Saturday at our home, Radio City Music Hall, this is the only second time in History that a boxing match has been held here. It’s pretty amazing,” said Seinecki.
