BURLINGAME, CA — Models walking the runway to flashing lights and blazing music. It may seem to be your typical fashion show — but it’s so much more.
This is the official charity fashion show by Share+Give initiative founder and renowned Pinay designer Gia Galicia.
The event also launched the 2019 United Against Cancer swimwear calendar.
Featured in the show and calendar were cancer survivors who Galicia contacted personally to be a part of her project.
“We want to show that the calendar is a platform for survivors to say that they beat cancer and look what they’re doing. They’re thriving. We just want to give hope.”
The message of the night was about early detection.
“Cancer doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t care how old you are, how much money you make, what color your skin is. It’s very pervasive and if you catch early, you get to live. I’m living proof,” said survivor Dana Richards.
Another message was to encourage hope and perseverance for those currently impacted by cancer.
“There are so many people not just us survivors, but there are people who are friends and family who survivors and we care. We are rooting for you. And we’re here for you. And standing not only behind you but beside you,” said Audrey Delong.
“It’s all about preserving your dignity during a really difficult time, especially during treatment. This is all new hair. I lost all my hair but I’m here to talk about it and I couldn’t have done it without my family and friends being there by my side all the step of the way.”
Featured on the swim-wear of the models were words of encouragement and resilience.
All proceeds from the event will go toward breast and ovarian cancer foundations, including the Pilipino Senior Resource Center’s breast cancer support services program.
According to Galicia, the event raised $12,000.
Galicia adds that for those who would still like to contribute can do so by purchasing the calendar online at unitedvscancer.com.
Galicia also shares that she has already been tapped to do another United vs. Cancer calendar for 2020.
