Democrats make last ditch effort to highlight need to remove Trump, as impeachment trial comes to a close

President Donald Trump is likely to score another victory this week, after easily winning the Iowa caucus on Monday, as the Republican Party’s 2020 presidential candidate.

On Wednesday, Senate Republicans are expected to vote to acquit President Trump on charges brought by the democratic-controlled House of Representatives that he abused his powers and obstructed Congress’ investigation of his dealings with Ukraine.

Senate Democrats impeachment managers, including Congressman Adam Schiff, made a last-ditch effort on Monday to highlight the need for the president’s removal.

Political science Professor Alain Sanders, meanwhile, said although Congressional Democrats would likely fail to remove president trump from office, history has shown they could still win.

“The fact that president’s face impeachment settings and impeachment proceedings has hurt their presidential party in the next election. You’ll recall the Republicans lost after Nixon, the Democrats lost the election after Clinton.”

Senators have until Wednesday afternoon to make their final case before the vote. This is the first impeachment trial in U.S. history without any witnesses.
