Daly City community leaders and volunteers give Filipino meals to those in need

DALY CITY, CA — Volunteers packed the Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center to prepare bags of food to be given away for free in celebration of Mother’s Day.

Each bag contained chicken adobo, rice, lumpia, pandesal, and bibingka. A vegan option was also available.

It started out as an idea by Daly City councilmember Ray Buenaventura, and after two weeks of planning with the rest of the city council and the community, it became a reality on Mother’s Day.

“Adobo being a staple of Filipino cuisine. Everybody loves adobo. All cultures love it. It’s really just a wonderful, traditional meal. So we thought ok let’s cook for the community but also let’s try to raise money and pay for our locally impacted restaurants, money so they can help their business and at the same time feed the community.”

Daly City leadership called the event a true community effort, especially since countless volunteers — from local residents to members of the fire department — served as cooks preparing Filipino food and adobo.

“We had planned to feed over 500. I, myself, have been keeping tabs of the list and we have gained 942 meals. Myself, I donated 50 meals and on top of that we had someone who came in yesterday and donated 400 pounds of chicken,” said Daly City Mayor Glenn Sylvester.

When it comes to distributing the food, there was a contactless pickup procedure, where vehicles were ushered into one of the stations.

From there, volunteers loaded the bags of food into the cars’ trunks.

In honor of Mother’s Day, people were also given flowers.

When it comes to volunteers’ safety — they were made to wear multiple layers of protection from face shields, hand-made masks, gloves, and gowns.

The volunteers were made up of a diverse group of people that included many mothers.

“Seeing the happy smiles and faces and the families, seniors and mothers that have come here that just makes it all worthwhile,” said vice mayor Juslyn Manalo.

Each food giveaway also came with information about the U.S. Census so people can take part if they have not done so already.
