REDWOOD CITY, Calif.—Federal counter terrorism experts described the Tsarnaev brothers’ alleged role in the Boston Marathon bombings as a classic pattern of young first or second-generation immigrants striking out after struggling to fit in.
Federal investigators said the brothers had no links to any terrorist groups after interrogating Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, on Monday. Officials believed they were motivated by their faith, apparently an anti-American, radical version of Islam and called them aspiring jihadists.
In an interview with CNN in Russia, the boys’ mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaev, said she couldn’t believe her children have turned into terrorists.
“They are being killed just because they were Muslim, nothing else,” said Zubeidat. “My sons were innocent.”
Memorial for fallen MIT police
A private memorial was held Tuesday for Sean Collier, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology officer allegedly killed in the line of duty by the bombing suspects.
Collier, 27, was killed near Kendall Square in Cambridge in what Boston police commissioner Edward Davis has called a “vicious assassination,’’ which reportedly helped the massive police response that led to the fatal wounding of Tamerlan Tsarnaev and the capture of his brother Dzhokhar, after a 20-hour manhunt, according to the Boston Globe.
On Wednesday, Vice President Joe Biden is expected to attend a public memorial service on the MIT campus.
