Redwood City, Calif – A mother’s indignation, a family in mourning–the De Leon’s in Bulacan could not make sense of the tragic death of Myleen “Mhai” De Leon-Scott, who was shot by sheriff deputies in Virginia after she ran amok.

Mhai worked inside the Costco store in Sterling, Virginia handing out pizza samples. Witnesses said she was agitated on Wednesday and started muttering strange things before she left her work station and grabbed a knife.

Her co-workers called authorities who claim that she came at them with a knife and a pair of scissors.

She was fatally shot multiple times, after an attempt to control her using a taser failed.

Her mother, Medina De Leon decries what she called an excessive use of force.

“What they did to her was brutal,” she tearfully told ABS-CBN, “if they thought she was not in her right mind, why did they have to kill her? She didn’t hurt or kill anyone. Why did they go to that extreme?”

De Leon said her daughter became depressed because of family problems. She had been divorced from her American husband for two years now and was fighting over the custody of their two children.

Before the incident, Mhai called her sister Melody in the Philippines and talked about feeling sad and anxious over fears that she may not be safe around her co-workers.

“We couldn’t accept what happened to my sister. I hope authorities would take a look at her case,” Melody said.

“We are seeking justice for the brutal slaying of my daughter,” Medina said.

Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Cuisia extended his condolences to the bereaved family and said that the embassy is ready to extend assistance if needed.

The Virginia State Police is now asking witnesses to come forward with information regarding the shooting by calling the Sheriff’s Office at 703-777-0475.

This is a very sad incident. Is it overkill? Sure multiple shots at a woman with just a knife would be an overkill. Yet, in defense of the police officers, they are trained that if a suspect becomes a threat to him and the public, do not shoot becomes null. It becomes shoot to save yourself and the rest of the public.
