VIRGINIA BEACH — Chris Garcia has inked celebrities like Billy Ray and Miley Cyrus, as well as Ultimate Fighting Championship Fil-Am fighter Brandon Vera.
This renowned tattoo artist was among accomplished Filipino Americans recognized at the recent Fil Fest in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
”Participating in the event brings tattooing out in the mainstream, and it helps make the art even more acceptable to the Filipino-American community.”
Garcia runs a tattoo studio with another seasoned Fil-Am tattoo artist, Carl Fuchs. As a way to give thanks to the community for their support, they gave away a free tattoo session thru a raffle during Filfest.
For the last five years, Fil Fest has provided a platform for artistic and skilled Filipinos to showcase their creative talents.
Film, arts and music — that’s the theme in this years Filfest and right now, Jay-R is performing on stage.
The Philippines’ R&B Prince headlined the performances for the 2-day event.
Artists also got to showcase their work.
Hollywood actor Michael Copon, who played Lucas Kendall or the Blue Ranger in Power Rangers Time Force, was also recognized at Fil Fest for his achievements.
He even got to join the fun – taking part in a lumpia eating contest.
“As Filipino-Americans, we may not be recognized in the American culture so things like this open us up to other opportunities and being able to show our skills to the world.”
And this is what exactly drives organizers to come up with an even better and bigger Fil Fest year after year.
