BETHLEHEM, Pa. – He was one of the top contenders to be Pope. Now Asia’s most prominent Catholic figure, the Archbishop of Manila, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle greets over 300 supporters in the city of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

The Cardinal is in town to help raise $100,000 for medical mobile clinics for the children of Manila in a project called “Make Sad Eyes Smile.”

“They are all our children too, whether we know them or not,” said Tagle.

To the attendees of the fundraising dinner, it was also a chance to see the Cardinal in person.

“We were laughing at some of the jokes we were exchanging,” said Dr. Mary Anne Pajel-sio. “I wish I could spend more time with him but as you can see there’s a big line of people who want to talk to him and get to know him better.”

The event became an outlet for a global connection.

The Cardinal is also the President of Caritas International, a global charity organization spanning 200 countries.

“There are many people suffering because of wars, you have the refugees, you have the forced migrants,” said Tagle.

When the Cardinal plans to meets with the Pope in New York City next week, he will not only discuss Filipino issues but global ones.

“Maybe to share with him what we see underground,” said Tagle.
