EDMONTON — Some kababayans in Edmonton are disappointed with the delay in the opening of the application to sponsor parents and grandparents into Canada.

The application period was set to re-open January 2nd.

But immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada announced on its website that the program will open in late January instead.

Advance information will be provided before it opens.

Last year, Canada’s minister of immigration announced changes to the sponsorship program for parents and grandparents by removing the unpopular lottery system.

Regulated Canadian immigration consultant Tony Santiago was one of many who never agreed with the lottery system for parents and grandparents sponsorship.

“I disagree based on the fact that its very arbitrary. So I have clients who have been waiting to apply for their parents but because they have not been chosen based on their expression of interest then hindi sila makapag apply. While other people who have just been eligible to apply napili swerte.”

The federal government has also increased the number of applications they will accept this year, from 17,000 in 2018 to 20,000.

Potential sponsors will indicate their willingness to sponsor a parent or grandparent through an online interest to sponsor form.

IRCC will send invitations based on the order in which the interest to sponsor forms are received until the 20,000 cap is reached.

By accepting more applications this year, as well as enhancing the intake system, the government of Canada is demonstrating its commitment to helping families live, work and thrive together in Canada.
