Canada government declares June as Filipino Heritage Month, advocates for immigrant caregivers

A member of Canada’s parliament urged the Canadian government to give permanent resident status to Filipino caregivers upon arrival in Canada.

Parliament member Salma Zahid came online to share in the celebration.

Zahid introduced Motion-155 in the House of Commons last year to designate June as Filipino Heritage month.

The motion passed unanimously in parliament.

In her speech, Zahid also mentioned the help of Narima Dela Cruz, founder of the Surrey Philippines Independence Day Society, in gathering support for M-155.

Dela Cruz said they were only given three weeks in January last year to gather actual signatures, and not just online support, from Filipinos.

They braved the winter chill and were able to get 850 signatures.

Filipinos from Surrey, B.C. celebrated the designation of June as Filipino Heritage Month across Canada starting this year.

Filipinos are among the top three ethnic groups in Canada, numbering more than 850,000.

Dela Cruz urges Filipino-Canadians to be more engaged and outspoken so they will be better represented in Canadian society.
