REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – She is the first Filipino to hold the post of State Supreme Court Chief Justice. Now California’s top judge—Tani Cantil-Sakauye—is taking on California’s governor, demanding more funding for the state’s courts.

Cantil-Sakauye wants $1 billion over the next three years to revamp California’s court system. Her plan aims to fix six years of budget cuts that closed down 51 courthouses and 205 courtrooms.

The FilAm chief justice says the state can no longer guarantee timely access to justice to Californians.

Governor Jerry Brown’s budget grants just $105 million to the courts this year. State finance officials say the prior budget cuts are permanent.
