CA fights for ‘sanctuary state’ status, with aftermath of first Pinoy deportation

by Steve Angeles, ABS-CBN News

With one undocumented Filipino now confirmed deported under President Donald Trump, the community is now finding ways to calm fears, by sharing knowledge with those in similar situations as undocumented immigrant Rey Galleon and his family.

On Saturday, the Pilipino Workers Center in Los Angeles will host a Know Your Rights workshop, where Galleon will address the community.

While they will go through the basic, what to do when detained procedures, they’re also going to emphasize plans to prepare for the worst after a deportation.

We can help provide resources we can help educate so not only they know their rights but then do preparation like preparing powers of attorney especially if you have children,” said Aqui Versoza Soriano of the Pilipino Workers Center. “Thinking of safety plans, and thinking and already connecting to legal assistance ahead of time, so you know, they’ll know what to do so they’ll have a chance. “

From property to work issues, ersoza says a plan is even more important when children are involved.

Like in Galleon’s situation — several recent cases in Southern California have happened after undocumented parents dropped off children at school.

“Imagine the fear that kids have that they’re going to come home and their parents aren’t there,” said Soriano. “It’s a reality under this situation, under this system right now, under this immigration system that is unfair and broken. We as a community. We want to call people. This is a wake up call; we need to come together and support our families.”

PWC says while they rally support for undocumented Filipinos and direct them to other places, such as churches and schools where they can find sanctuary from immigration officials.

It’s a different case in other nearby cities.

Galleon’s deportation comes as California is battling over maintaining “sanctuary state” status.

Issues raised by Filipinos, such as “Make Cali Great Again” Rachel Gunther, during the weekend’s rally for Donald Trump.

West Covina — with one of the largest concentrations of Filipinos, along with neighboring Walnut — came out on Wednesday afternoon to oppose SB54: a bill that would make California a sanctuary state.

Under the proposal, local law enforcement agencies would be banned from helping ICE arrest and deport undocumented immigrants.

It would also create so-called “safe zones,” where ICE cannot apprehend undocumented immigrants.

Several mayors in San Diego County, which borders Mexico, have also come out in opposition to SB54.

They all say the bill would cause dangerous felons and criminals to be set free.

Despite the proposal saying it will not interfere with the removal of undocumented felons, the bill is expected to be voted on soon at the state legislature.

More Pinoys illegal alien will be deported soon. They broke the law…In my opinion it is the decision of the mother if he will bring home their US born child back to PH or have it adopted here or give it to the Social worker to raise the child. For the Sanctuary Cities Pinoys leaders, are you going to take care of the illegal alien for life? Use common sense, because you hate Trump, don’t waste your time… stupid… take care of your self and family first.
