Bureau and community leaders urge Filipino community to take part in the 2020 Census

NEVADA — A panel was formed by Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak to encourage statewide participation in the 2020 census.

Mailing of the census is set to begin in March, but outreach efforts have increased, particularly in the Filipino community.

In 2010, the census reported that the Filipino population is the fastest-growing minority group among Asian American and Pacific Islanders in northern and southern Nevada. Filipinos make up the second-largest minority group in the silver state next to Latinos.

“In 2010, there’s at least 108 thousand Filipinos which makes us the largest population within the Asian community like even though adding all the other Asian community we still have the largest population.”

O’Brien assures immigrants — regardless of their immigration status — should feel comfortable answering the census forms.

Despite the citizenship question controversy, she pointed out that the census actually helps the federal government provide representation and federal funding for citizens.

“There’s always a question what about our kababayans who don’t have the proper paperwork who are undocumented who do not have the right paperwork if they take the survey are they gonna be deported that’s always the question. And my answer to that is: for U.S. census we have confidentiality.”

“Census is such a misunderstood word, sometimes what was expressed was then, my status here will be questioned and I might have to do a jury duty and O just don’t get it what census is all about and what the civic engagement that we did and I’m talking about the Filipino American community,” said Gloria Caoili. “In 2016 and 2018 we understand more the importance of the political process. Because it’s numbers like ours that will really resonate for the revenue that the community could access.”

The 2020 U.S. Census count will not only determine how many seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives but it also impacts the funding allocation for social services, education, and infrastructure in the federal, state, and local levels.

O’Brein added that because the 2010 census count revealed an increase of population in southern Nevada, one more district has been added. Clark County now has a total of 4 districts.

“It will take ten minutes to take the survey, but it will impact you for ten years of life. So ten minutes that will impact ten years of your life. So think about that.”

These community leaders believe that removing the citizenship question will encourage more immigrants to participate in the census — and actually be counted.

“Importante na mapasama tayo sa census kasi we need to be counted at saka kung may pumunta sa bahay nyo at kumatok para magsurvey, wag kayong matakot kase importante yan.”

“Kailangan mapabilang tayong mga pilipino dito sa las vegas in order for our votes ma count. At saka makasama tayo sa mga activites dito.”

Community leaders said there’s strength in numbers — and when these numbers are accurately reflected in the U.S. Census, then the community can demand more attention and services from the government.

Removing the CITIZENSHIP question on the CENSUS on 2009 was OBAMA’s brilliance. Voting DISTRICT were created by number of Citizen voters, but due to lack of voters ID records, they go to CENSUS for total number of population. This is one of the the formula of having “No GOP Prez for the next 100 years”. Create more Sanctuary Cities, for illegal will come, Open the border-for easy entry, abolished ICE, then create new District, they called that REDISTRICTING.It means Re-drawing legislative district, all Congressman,State legislative, and many local officers are elected from District.
TRUMP saw this, do counter punch…came up with Exec Order,it is mandatory for IRS, Social Security Office, Medicare, USDA (foods stamps) and other Fed offices to submit the number of CITIZEN at Dept of Commerce, cover-up for funding purposes. Eventually Trump will find out that there are 8-11 Democrat controlled District illegally created.

It is really good to hear that the Bureau and Community leaders are urging the Filipino community to participate in the 2020 census. Now the Trump is the President, every Filipinos with the “right mind” will once again vote. The result of the 2016 election was because people with the right mind voted in favor of the person they believed could run this country the way it is supposed to be…and that is to support and defend the United States Constitution. The Democrats were butt hurt until this day they keep swinging or turning to the left and the sad part about it is that even added four radical left winged liberal Democrats aiming to destroy the U.S. some more, says Cyril Castro, Nevada resident.
