LOS ANGELES – The search is on and they arrived in style: twenty Filipina-Americans vied for the chance to be the next Binibining Pilipinas, and hopefully, Miss Universe. With the Philippines scoring three consecutive Top 5 finishes in the Ms. Universe pageant, Filipina-Americans are hoping to get their shot at representing the Philippines.
“I wanted to get a better understanding of my culture and represent the country as
well,” said contestant Jessica Joan.
“It’s very exciting to have this opportunity. I look forward to the pageant,” said another contestant, Kayla Nardes.
“They have the opportunity to compete in the Bb. Pilipinas provided that they have
or meet the requirements of the Bb. Pilipinas-Universe set by Araneta.
“We have the option to choose who among the candidates we would send to the Philippines to compete. Nevertheless, whether they meet the requirements or not, we will send someone to compete in Ms. Philippines-Earth, as well as Bb. Pilipinas-Universe in the Philippines,” said Mildred Deang, CEO Insider Productions.
Pageant experts hope to see a good pageant of Filipina-Americans later this month. They
are curious to see how a local Filipina-American, especially a mixed race Pinay, would
fare in the Bb. Pilipinas pageant possibly following Venus Raj, Shamcey Supsup, and
Janine Tugonon who were all considered to be classic Filipina beauties.
“There’s a trend. It’s not just color, it’s not just features. I’m proud that
Filipinas have different kind of beauty. They can be mestiza. They can be brown beauty
and everything. That’s why Filipinas are one of the top contenders in all the
pageant,” said beauty expert, Monet Lu.
“I think the crown is fair game — what I can bring
to the table is I’m just going to be confident on stage,”candidate Alexandra Drechsler said.
Mentoring the girls is another, said former Bb. Pilipinas, Anjanette Abayari.
“They’re really young and I’ve gone through and experienced so many things all these
years that have now become a part of me that’s natural and I have so much to teach and
offer them,” said Abayari
The girls will undergo several weeks of training and shows before the coronation at the
end of this month which Ms. Universe 2010 4th runner up and Adobo Nation host Lee Robin
Salazar will host.
