Arizona radio host honored for empowering Filipino American community

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — The Arizona Asian community gathered to celebrate outstanding leaders in their community at the 2019 Ani Awards. Ani stands for achievement, nationalism and inspiration.

Fil-Am radio personality Rhia Luz received the inspiration award for creating and hosting her online radio show, Buhay Buhay sa Amerika.

“The radio show is all about promoting Filipino culture and helping our people to be lifted up be inspired with the stories of our kababayans here in America. As well as in the middle of the show I bring local talents to perform live so that is one way we can keep on promoting our culture, our people and the talents we have here in America.” 

Ani award winners were selected by a panel including former actor and photographer, Jojit Lorenzo.

Rhia took her passion and created her online radio show in 2017. She has listeners from all around the world. Her cohost, Cynthia Lyons says that the show also keeps Fil-Ams grounded.

“Our culture and our tradition is not supposed to be forgotten when you come to America. So Buhay Buhay sa Amerika is teaching you what our culture is all about, how to speak Tagalog and to know where our roots come from.” 

“We have to show the world that we have our own voice. That we can make an impact and contribute to the positive betterment of the world. So that’s how I feel. And she’s well-deserved. It’s very well-deserved for Rhia Luz.”

Luz says that she feels a sense of duty as a radio show host to represent the Filipino culture.

“It is a responsibility in a way because now I have to step higher, and I have to do more to be able to represent our culture our Filipino roots here in America.
