PHOENIX, ARIZONA — Last Sunday, a father drowned while trying to save his 11-year-old son at a popular swimming area in Fossil Creek, Camp Verde.
This photo of Gary Gaytano’s son was taken by a family friend — just minutes before he started struggling to swim.
Upon seeing his son in trouble, Gaytano dove into the water and saved his son’s life but lost his own in his heroic act.
Families, friends, and even bystanders took turns in performing CPR on Gaytano for more than an hour until paramedics arrived in the remote area. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
His co-workers set up a GoFundMe account for his funeral expenses. His funeral is set later this week.
This is the second death in the Fossil Creek area this year and the seventh since 2015 according to officials.
