American Canyon mayor Leon Garcia, who is married to a Filipina, said that the American Canyon Police Department is now trying to determine who sent the racist hate-filled letters to Filipino residents of this Napa County community this week.
“This is so uncharacteristic of our city,” said Garcia.
The letter appears to have originated from a state agency, but had a return label that said, “Concerned Neighbors of American Canyon”.
The letter targets a specific individual for reportedly practicing cosmetology with an expired license but later proceeds to call all Filipinos in American Canyon “filthy” and “unwanted” by the community.
The American Canyon Police said that while the letter is full of hate, it may not be considered a hate crime, because no specific threats were made. Authorities said they are still trying to identify the senders and talk to them about possible motives involved. Garcia said his office is also investigating the violation involved in posing as a sender from a state agency.
“This is an unconscionable act. We are the most diverse community in Napa County and we are not going to be defined by an individual or individuals who have a bad attitude,” added Garcia.
Garcia said although the senders have not been identified at this time, he said, “The police are on top of the matter and we are continuing our investigation.”
