Advocates say tough road ahead for immigration bill, but hopeful it will pass this year

By Henni Espinosa, ABS-CBN North America Bureau

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -The future does not seem to look bright for the comprehensive immigration bill in the House of Representatives. After a closed-door meeting in Washington D.C., top Republicans on Capitol Hill now predict that the bill could die a slow death in the House.

Conservatives there oppose the bipartisan legislation that’s already approved in the Democratic-controlled Senate. The senate bill includes a pathway to citizenship for an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants, as well as increased border security.

“If the Republican party does not embrace immigration reform, including a pathway to citizenship, I think the party could e making a long-term, huge political mistake. Immigration reform is going to help the party rebrand itself after their debacle in the 2012 election,” pointed out David Leopold, past president and general counsel of the American Immigration Lawyers Association or AILA.

House Republicans have called the senate’s version flawed. House Speaker John Boehner has reportedly assured lawmakers that he will not allow an immigration bill to pass without a vast majority backing it.

Leopold said there is no guarantee that the conservatives in the House would even consider giving a pathway to citizenship to undocumented immigrants but he said they should not be concerned.

“What people could do, especially citizens, is get out there and make sure their voices are heard in Washington and push their congress people, their senators, their representatives to make sure they do the will of the American people,” he said.

Leopold is hopeful a comprehensive immigration reform bill will make its way to President Barack Obama’s desk this year.

“I don’t think it’s going to get passed this summer, or even fall. But I think by the end of the year, we’re going to see an immigration bill and ultimately the House is going to see the light and vote for a bill that includes a reasonable pathway to citizenship for the undocumented,” concluded Leopold.

A small victory for LEGAL/ NON-CRIMINAL IMMIGRANTS!!! I agree, biased reporting pro criminals, I guess you guys can’t find a republican to interview? Your unknown and unelected guest is so ignorant in criticizing “elected” congressmen… who cares about his biased opinion? You wasted 3 minutes of airtime on him.

libtard, what you wrote doesn’t make any sense. A legal immigrant always had rights; it’s the illegal immigrant that needs to be deported. If you come into the country illegally that makes you a criminal. I am not an advocate of violence, but I do believe in deporting those who have entered the country illegally or knowingly over stayed their visa(s) no matter how long they’ve been in the country. If you came home and someone was sitting in your house uninvited, would you ask them to leave or serve them dinner?

Why or the llegals will vote them out, 75 percent of the 11 million will require some sort of financial assistance like welfare, food stamps and free healthcare, Is it fair for Americans to pay for this burden at a time when 22 millions of Americans are unemployed or under employed

They will only get those financial assistance, food stamps and healthcare once they get permanent residency after 10 years of waiting.

‘I was a stranger and you welcomed me’

    By Tony Magliano

Thirty-five-years-ago when Annunciation House – a sanctuary and home of hospitality that has served over 100,000 refugees, homeless poor and undocumented workers – was started in El Paso, Texas, founding director Ruben Garcia and a few friends, wanted to place themselves among the poor, to see where the poor would lead them. He said, “They took us to the undocumented – the most vulnerable.”
Garcia explained that since the undocumented have no legal status in the United States, they are forced to take undesirable, poorly paid jobs, which offer no benefits. Unlike poor U.S. citizens, undocumented workers and their families cannot receive food stamps, Medicaid, or housing assistance. They are at the lowest rung of American life.
So why do they come? They come because most often they and their families are extremely poor, and they cannot find jobs in their native countries that pay a living wage. The U.S. has many more low-skilled jobs than there are Americans who are willing to take them. Why don’t they enter legally? Because there are too few low-skilled visas available.
Kevin Appleby, director of migration policy for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, said only 5,000 permanent resident visas and approximately 106,000 temporary worker visas are issued per year for foreign low-skilled workers. Yet, he said that before the current recession, 500,000 workers every year came to the U.S. and found jobs.
Therefore, millions of foreign workers must secretly and dangerously – moving through deserts and facing drug gangs –cross the border to fill vacant American jobs in order to support their very poor families. Appleby said, “The current system is a mess.” There is hope that this mess can soon be cleaned up – at least somewhat.
The “Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013” (S.744) would allow approximately 11 million undocumented migrants to come out of the shadows of second-class existence by providing provisional legal status and protection from deportation and worker exploitation. It would open a path toward permanent residency and citizenship – after waiting 10 and 13 long years respectively.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops supports this bill, said Appleby. But they need our help to get it passed into law. Email and call (Capitol switchboard: 202-224-3121) your two U.S. senators and House representative urging them to co-sponsor and vote for the “Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013.”
Blessed Pope John XXIII, in his encyclical “Pacem in Terris” (“Peace on Earth”) wrote, “Every human being has the right to freedom of movement and of residence within the confines of his own country; and, when there are just reasons for it, the right to emigrate to other countries and take up residence there.”
Garcia asked that I raise the following questions: “Should undocumented immigrants have to live in an underground world? Is it right to use closed borders to exploit cheap labor? Why is it acceptable to have undocumented workers perform jobs few Americans are willing to do – pick our fruits and vegetables, wash dishes, and work in meat slaughterhouses?”
Lord Jesus, heal our nation’s indifference, and inspire us to welcome these strangers as valuable members of your one human family, so that on the Day of Judgment we may gladly hear you say, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”

Sad that sometimes somebody will use the religion card like somebody uses the race card when they can not argue logically or without reason. Are you willing to feed and clothe them by yourself without taking thise benefits from Americans that actually worked for them. If our resources are benefit then no problem but with more than 20 million Americans unemployed or under employed its not right

      14 July 2013 at 7:40 pm - Reply

@fikat…. But it is you who cannot argue logically or without reason. Why can’t you use religion? Are you atheist? Don’t you believe in the power of Church’s social teachings and its charitable contributions? I have no problem playing the race card either when it’s so blatanly obvious that the posts being replied to are going below the belt that contain racist comments. Also, just to remind you that there are more deeper and hidden issues not being discussed and are being camouflaged by the lable, “ILLEGAL ALIENS.” Do you understand that fikat? In other words, when they say they are against illegal aliens, they have other deeper issues they are not verbalizing. Deep down, they are anti Catholic, hate Mexicans and poor people and will use the legal sysmtem to justify those inner issues they are feeling. Do you understand that fikat? Are you like that?

It is absolutely right to be helping THE MOST VULNERABALE members of our society. It is not right to belittle them when the government is finally trying to do something about the immigration issues. It is not right to deport all the undocumented immigrants. NEVER!!! And it is not right to be using the poor Americans against the undocumented immigrants. The Republicans pass farm bill $195 billion in corporate wellfare while trying to cut the food stamps to 0! Is that caring about the poor Americans and the unemployed? No. Do you know what the GOP’s plan for solving poverty in America? This is their plan if you already don’t know:
      1) DON’T FEED THE POOR
      2)DON’T HOUSE THE POOR
3)DON’T GIVE THE POOR ACCESS TO MEDICINE NOR GOOD SCHOOLS
      4)DON’T LET THE POOR VOTE

The Democratic Party are trying to solve all these issues and are helping ALL the oppressed, marginalized, discriminated against, people that are at the bottom of social class.

TO SUMMARIZE WHAT THIS FIGHT IS ALL ABOUT IF YOU HAVEN’T LEARNT ANYTHING, FIKAT, IN WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THIS COUNTRY, IT IS TO WHOSE GROUP THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD PUT PRIORITY IN HELPING, THE RICH OR THE POOR? THAT’S IT! That is all the issue that is being fought in the Senate and Congress. When The Obama Administration decided to focus on helping the poor and people at the bottom of social scale(BRAVO!), the rich conservatives reacted because they no longer get the preferential treatment…. That’s all… Now, do you understand?

The Republicans know that if they will not pass the immigration reform their political career will be jeopardize, but they set aside their political career for the sake of the millions of US citizens who are now considered poor and unemployed. Unlike other politicians and the government, they are using the illegal immigrants for their political agenda. I believe with our present economic situation now, this is not the best time to legalize the illegals. The government should concentrate first on how to give jobs to the unemployed US citizens (a lot of people are now dependent on food stamps) and fix the borders. Almost all the jobs that’s being offered now are only part time positions not more than 50 hours every pay period or a job a from a manpower agency. Not all the people may not know what’s really happening in the US nowadays because of the social media and maybe they’re not affected or doesn’t really care for other people. Watch Fox News Channel instead of CNN and other networks so you will the difference and you will be more updated of what’s really going on in this government/country.

The GOP pass Farm Bill which end the entire program’s existence. Is that caring about the poor American citizens? I don’t think you guys know what you are talking about.

‘Nuns on Bus’ visit Santa Clara, push for immigration reform

reporters when she stepped off the bus
in Santa Clara, June 17, near conclusion
of cross-country tour to urge passage of
    comprehensive immigration reform in the
    U.S. Congress.

    By Roberta Ward
The “Nuns on the Bus” campaign made a June 17 stop in the Diocese of San Jose near the end of their 6,500-mile cross-country tour to push for comprehensive immigration reform, now in the U.S. Senate – S. 744. A House bill is being written by a bipartisan panel of eight members, but its details had not been released.
Sister Simone Campbell, a Sister of Social Service who is head of the Catholic social justice lobby, Network, headed the tour with the bus full of women Religious.
She said, “As members of the Church, we are all called to share this journey together and follow the Gospel mandate to welcome the immigrant.”
She said that Network stands with the U.S. bishops “in calling on Congress to take immediate action to create a roadmap to citizenship and pass comprehensive immigration reform. The time is now.”
“Network Nuns on the Bus: A Drive for Faith, Family and Citizenship” kicked off the tour May 29 in New Jersey and was scheduled to end June 18 in San Francisco, passing through 40 cities in 15 states.
From June 14-18, they joined with California business and civic leaders to urge elected officials to support immigration reform that will boost economic growth and provide a roadmap to citizenship for 11 million aspiring Americans.
“Californians are counting on their elected officials to deliver real solutions to our broken immigration system,” said Sister Elizabeth Avalos, BVM, of San Jose, who was on the tour.
Sister Simone urged people to fill out cards to be sent to legislators. “Raise your hands, raise your voice,” she said, “asking people to “Text ‘Nuns’ to 877877. We’ll text back when to call your senator.”
The bus stopped at Silicon Valley Bank in Santa Clara where a panel discussion took place which included Sister Simone and Father Jon Pedigo, pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in east San Jose, Rabbi Melanie Aron of Congregation Shir Hadash in Los Gatos, several Silicon Valley executives, and facilitated by Carl Guardino, Vice-Chair of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group.
Guardino posed several questions to panelists including why they support reform. Answers were: “It’s the right thing to do; for the sake of the children and the future; for families–to keep them together.”
Sister Simone said that she was moved by the personal stories of people she met during the tour. “A 19-year-old young woman is raising her younger siblings because their parents have been deported. We have to listen to the visceral truth of people’s lives,” she said.
Father Pedigo agreed. “People’s stories speak volumes! In my area of San Jose, there is palpable fear of being deported, being separated from loved ones – this wreaks havoc in communities and families!”
He and Rabbi Aron each said that faith communities are playing a large role in promoting reform. “People of faith have come together all over the country at vigils and demonstrations,” Aron said. Father Pedigo noted, “Historically, we are an immigrant Church, especially in the United States, and we need to honor that.”
He added that crime is also an issue in communities where people fear deportation because they shy away from reporting to police anything suspicious or clearly criminal. “This makes immigrants susceptible to increasing crime.”
Immigration reform has bipartisan support and polls show a majority of Americans favor it. The U.S. bishops have long advocated for it, need for a path to legal status for the estimated 11 million undocumented people and, in particular, reforms that preserve family unity; ensure just wages and working conditions for immigrant workers; provide for humane law enforcement; and address the root causes of migration.

obama’s DHS front czar napolitano is resigning, leaving string of lawsuits, immigration reform controversies such as ICE accused the leadership of napolitano of prosecutorial discretions, by DHS lawyers cherry picking illegal aliens for deportations, enacted dream act style policy for young illegal aliens reprieve, have demonstrated napolitano’s consistent disrespect of the rule of law, downplay global terrorist threats with her radical view of terrorism as man caused disasters, giving TSA the go signal allowing small knives on air travel, later was dropped, all with the blessing of her boss obama. opponents of immigration reform have been against napolitano’s job performance as head of DHS, for one her claim of strong border security is nothing but rhetorics, based on her proven record as a couldn’t care less public servant to stop illegal immigration. napolitano knows damn well she has become an ineffective leader, just like obama. its time for her to go and get another job, not in immigration, a job she failed big time.

the predominantly GOP house were voted by their constituents to vote NO on this radical immigration reform, aka de facto amnesty. the same happened with obamacare where the predominantly democrats voted YES on obamacare were all voted out, so all this talk of gloom to be voted out on reelection is nothing but a ploy. these are the representatives of the people of their home states, will be voting on what their constituents mandate, which is the version of the house dictated by the people they represents. the economy is the biggest problem of the USA, as many have weighed on illegal aliens without doubt will further slam down the meager questionable recovery, questionable with gas price hikes, goods and services as necessities, not luxuries are unaffordable with skyrocketing prices for hard workers who are heavily taxed to support the lazies of america. propagandas of legalizing illegal aliens will improve the economy are dangerous guessing game. people must be careful, should have learned from obamacare, now postponed for another year, coming to realization obamacare can be detrimental to the economy. the private businesses are dropping their employees to less than fifty, decreasing work hours to part-time, employers may choose to pay cheaper fines on their tax returns, than pay for obamacare for their employees.

emotive languages are what these pro illegal aliens for legalizations use to capture the emotions of the segments of the public, who are either confused or not self informed of the topic, in this case the legalization of millions of illegal aliens in america. all this baseless talk of lawbreaker employers in the name of huge profits hiring illegal aliens are open jobs, no citizens or legal aliens will never ever take are to mislead the public. the outlaw employers are not seriously punished with big fines and imprisonments, always getting away with their hiring of illegal aliens, instead of hiring citizens/legal aliens will hit their bottom lines with what the law allows for legal wages/benefits.

the argument, their country of origin is too poor does not excuse their violations of entering the USA illegally or illegally overstaying with an expired visas. foreigners from poor nations are afforded legal immigrations through the legal ways or procedures. pro illegal alien activists complaining how poor the countries are, if these illegal aliens are deported back to their country of origin, simply is a total hogwash argument. for one, how did it become the responsibilities of america and its citizens to allow illegal aliens from poor countries to illegally invade a sovereign nation, the USA. try doing the same in countries of europe, japan, singapore, etc. second, why are these pro illegal alien activists are pushing this toxics of illegality to law abiding people. this pro illegal alien activists are barking on the wrong tree, their complain of nations being poor must be directed to the corrupt government of the said nation, if indeed, these pro illegal alien activists talking their one liner using quotations from religious leader, who by no means are promoting illegal activities, yes, you all can move freely away from your own comfort zones or your own countries the legal way, stop and do not propagandized religious leaders are condoning illegal aliens lawless actions.

There really is one solution to all of these problems and it is not done by lengthy opinions, debate and arguments. The real solution is to let the Rule of Law handle these issues. Let those who are qualified enough to handle the arguments and let them decide what’s best and not best for the country. We all voted for them to be where they at now, therefore we trusted them to do their jobs as our representatives.

you are not only ignorant but a lunatic, who kept on spitting pig wash languages to justify your personal attack. i am coming to conclusion based on your writing input, you yourself is an illegal TNT, that the reality of this immigration reform sham is striking the chord of your nerves. do me a favor, go to school study the science and art of politics in america, maybe then if your comprehensions have improve, which i strongly doubt will correctly know the difference between politics of liberalism and conservatism. why you kept on interjecting your dialect, are you running out of english words?, then your crazy emesis of other except you, cannot write proper english, driving the law abiding folks laughing AT YOU and not WITH YOU, a position a normal person wouldn’t want to be. i bet you, that simple english words, phrases or languages, you will not even comprehend, sorry i cannot write other language, but only english. i have one suggestion that may help you, go in front of the mirror, see yourself in the mirror, ask yourself, am i indeed a person who can write english well or am i in denial by accusing others of without ability to write english, maybe you will get your answer, so you must stop your moronic dialogues of wasteful analysis of others, their capabilities of writing english, because you are the worst when it comes to writing english. WAKE UP AND ACCEPT THE TRUTH period.

delialusional, buloknaisda, definitely aka av, with that picture. what analysis on the subject of illegal alien legalizations have you written so far, none, zero, nadaaaa. all you do is showcasing your own pea-brained for the whole world to read your pig swill one liner, trying hard unintelligently for two liners of personal attack, so you will feel big? haven’t i told you if you are crawling like an ant trying to bite, you certainly will easily be exterminated. if you were flying like an infected mosquito spreading your dengue virus, the same extermination will happen to you. choose which one you prefer get exterminated with your personal attack or write on the topic being discussed. you are telling me i have little knowledge of the issue, does not know how to analyze? is the description of you, so far you have not put forth clear, credible analysis on your love for illegal aliens to save your multiple faces, go ahead start your analytical brain to work, if you have one, otherwise the world watcher are loudly laughing at you.

are you really serious or you are plain looney to say politician lawmakers to vote what is not best for the country. these politicians were voted in power by their constituents, in turn to vote on laws that are best for the country, a well managed, constitutionally run government are what are best for the USA will benefit the citizens and legal aliens on their pursuit of happiness, an inherent american freedom. legal aliens are welcome, not the illegal alien lawbreakers, being used by pandering politicians for the purpose of their own self interests, any way you all slice it, is immoral.

@noz… really? As a law abiding citizen of America, why then you and your own kind haven’t respected the constitutionality of OBAMACARE, decisions made by the supreme court judges? don’t you exhibit an unconstitutional behavior, illegal provocateur, dangerous to the american population?

Both the State and the Church share similar agreements as to what is need to be done on social justice issues in America. Now, you don’t seem to be in line with neither of them. Do you think you consider yourself American? The State is not on your side and I can positively say that the Church will not have anything to do with you either. So if the State don’t like you and the Church don’t like you either, who else then will like you?

Oh its about you Noz, and your opinions about this issue. You are trying to so very hard to point out that Immigration reform is not the way to solve the immigration issues. If you were to decide and say you are given the power to change the world, what would you do rather? Would you stick to your guts being a conservative as you can be even you know that you have little chance to succeed? You are so pathetic in terms of arguing and you lack knowledge on how to make your case. Noz, why don’t you join those who decided to live in isolation due to the changing world, with your beliefs and your style of extraordinary conservatism, it’s going to be tough for you to live in today’s world.

its about me? HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, HA, joining the global watchers laughing AT YOU. why don’t you go to a shrink to treat your insanity, explore what medications will work in treating your madness of why you are directing your frustrations to an individual, then come back and write your two cents about the topic, look above and read the topic, that is if you really have two cents left in your pea-brained. don’t you want all these global watchers to stop laughing AT YOU with your consistent showing of your trashy writing? you know what?, if these global watchers are tired of laughing AT YOU, which i hope they don’t get tired of laughing, they might throw you in the garbage because you are a waste. why not save yourself of humiliations by shutting up, if you don’t then you voluntarily chose SHAMES. go on, show the world your idiocies on issues you cannot weigh on intelligently, so you engage on personal attack, the global watchers will not only laugh AT YOU, but intermittently will scream AT YOU of SHAME ON YOU, SHAME ON YOU, SHAME ON YOU, SHAME ON YOU, SHAME ON YOU, SHAME ON YOU, SHAME ON YOU, SHAME ON YOU, SHAME ON YOU, SHAME ON YOU.

Okay Noz, your response is just a pure example of what kind of a person you are, you simply cannot handle an argument. Speak for yourself Noz, for what you are saying is all about you not me and anyone that has argued with you regarding your senseless opinions. There’s absolutely nothing wrong of expression of speech, but there’s absolutely something wrong when the person expressing his/her speech has no points on their speech or topic. Get a good life Noz, feel sorry for you because you cannot handle such situations when you are being questioned.

I do not know what happened to those I argued with in this site as they have remained silent for quite sometime now, You hear me Noz, You hear me??? So be quiet and just stop writing senseless opinions !!!!!

Then you want your kids to die in schools and on the streets while they play peacefully, is that how you want your Second Amendment you damn idiot? You want to bear arms? Go ahead and carry your guns but please let it fall on the right people, not like you that you are almost shooting people on this website through your ALL CAPS and ANGRY responses. Why don’t you show your Americanism by supporting what is right and not what is right to KILL innocent human beings. This is no longer your pops and ma’s time, this is 2013 ! We don’t live in the wild wild west era anymore where carrying a gun was a norm. Tell that you want your Second Amendment to those parents whose their lives were shattered when their little angels were KILLED by your Second Amendment. Where is your heart Noz??? We Filipinos are very religious people and are conservatives in a way. But we would never let our kids KILLED by some bozo that has a right to MURDER innocent lives !

You NRA people have the guts to say what you want to say because you own guns. Have you heard of being shut without the use of any firepower??? I didn’t start the threat, you did. Now Noz, if you continue to say those words that you just said, I maybe compelled to report this incident to the NRA here in DC and worse, the FBI. You are threatening your counterparts Noz. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE !
