GABRIELA activists write letters to political prisoners in the Philippines

OAKLAND, CA —  These Pinays celebrated Valentine’s in Oakland with the one Billion Rising dance.

One Billion Rising is an international rally and movement that calls for an end to violence against women and girls, which is commemorated also on Valentine’s Day.

In addition, Pinays of GABRIELA Oakland also spent the evening writing letters of support to be sent to political prisoners in the Philippines.

“They’re tagged as communists, as terrorists but in reality what they are really doing is fighting for human rights and a lot of them are doing labor rights… and they’re trying to help working class people.”

According to the One Billion Rising organization, 1 in 3 women across the planet will be beaten or raped during their lifetime.

This gathering was also to honor international women, trans-women, all those who suffer injustice.

These activists say that the value of a handwritten letter means a lot to those who are imprisoned.

“They really appreciate it when people write to them because to receive letters from young people; for it to say I wish you well and there are orgs and we’re all here together.”
