LODI, NJ – While it takes years to be a great drummer, it comes so naturally for this 3-year-old Filipino Martin Cruz of Iselin, NJ.
He’s not even old enough to go to school, yet he’s already schooling older drummers with his skills.
“Someday sana maging best drummer siya like mga Phil Collins, like that,” his father Dennis Cruz said.
Martin was only 1 year and 3 months old when he learned his first drum beats.
His father Dennis, a church band drummer was rehearsing when he noticed martin was air drumming.
“Sumasabay siya, with music, nakikita ko siya sa side, sabi ko sabay ah,” Dennis said.
So he let the air drummer try out the real thing and sat Martin on his chair.
“Nanonood lang siya and then by oido, tinetenga niya lang yung music and makikita mo mamaya he’s playing,” Dennis said. “Sometimes nga mag-play ka ng music right away sinusundan na niya agad.”
When Martin turned two-and-a-half, he was already performing in churches including this one in Lodi, NJ.
Parish priest Liam Panganiban said, “It is a gift, really, because everything we have really is a gift from God.”
Parishioner Rommel Ruby said, “It’s not ordinary, because if you don’t have the gift, you wont be able to do it.”
Martin said there’s one particular part of drumming that he likes best — drum rolls.
With near perfect timing, a brilliant sense of rhythm and impressive chops even at a young age, the Cruz family believes that Martin’s “God-given” gift can be honed even further.
They’re planning to enroll Martin in a professional drum school as soon as he is able to do so.
