26-year-old Filipino American suspect charged in drug smuggling case

A 26-year-old American citizen from Madison, Wisconsin, Orion Alfonso Hamre-Tamayo, is behind bars in the Philippines on drug charges.

Tamayo, who is charged with drug smuggling, was arrested on May 20th after picking up a package containing thirty vape e-cigarette cartridges of liquid THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, at local customs.

Tamayo claimed he doesn’t know the sender of the package, which came from China, and his mother, Davina Stewart, believes he was set up and is innocent.

According to Stewart, he’s never had a run-in with the law before.

Tamayo has dual citizenship in America and the Philippines. In 2011, Tamayo moved to the Philippines.

He’s currently being held at the Philippine drug enforcement agency headquarters in Quezon City.

The state department said it is following along with the case and providing consular services.
